Swiss chard is green leafy vegetable either green or reddish in color. Its often known for its nutritional value as like other leafy vegetables. In South India its often called as "Molai keerai" or "Keerai Thandu".Its cooked as a curry with dhal also known as 'kootu'.
Ingredients
- Swiss chard - 4 leaves
- Toor dhal - 100 gm
- Tomato - 2 (Sliced)
- Green Chilly - 3 (Sliced)
- Chilly Powder - 1/2 tspn
- Turmeric Powder - a pinch
- Kari vadaham - 1 tspn
- Curry leaves
- Garlic - 3 cloves
- Ghee - 1 tspn
- Salt - to taste
Preparation
Wash the dhal and keep it ready.Wash the chard leaves and chop it into small pieces.
Chop the tomato into small pieces.
Take a pressure cooker and add the chopped chard leaves, dhal, tomato, salt, water and turmeric powder.
Cook until 4 whistles. Then open the cooker after the pressure has completely released.
Just break the kari vadaham into small pieces and keep it aside.Cut garlic into very small pieces.
In a small pan, add ghee and fry the garlic pieces. When it turns brown add curry leaves followed by the kari vadaham.
Then pour this into the dhal in the cooker.
If you wish you can boil the dhal until it just bubbles. This will remove any raw dhal smell if any.
The swiss chard dhal is now ready to be served with chapathi or rice.
Just a tspn of ghee, garlic and the kari vadaham makes this dhal really delicious and flavorful.
