Diagnosis

Diagnosis:

Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test : This indicates the blood sugar levels over the past few months.It indicates the percentage of sugar that is attached with the hemoglobin whereas hemoglobin is the protein that is responsible for carrying oxygen in the red blood cells(RBC).

Understanding Diabetic A1c: In balancing the blood sugar levels,A1c plays a main role.This number increases as the sugar level increases.It gives a long term view of the body's insulin resistance levels and its ability to process glucose.

 * A1c levels of 5.6 and lower are said to be in the healthy range.But those who are closer to 5.6 are said to be trending towards prediabetes.

 * A1c levels between 5.7 and 6.4 fall under prediabetic range.

 * A1c levels of 6.5 and higher indicate diabetes.

If your A1c levels are high,some proactive steps can reduce the levels as well as can reverse the diabetes if treated at an early stage.

For people with certain conditions ,A1c may be inaccurate.They could be subjected to the following types of tests:

Random blood sugar test:

Regardless of when you ate,blood sample is being drawn at a random time.

* Sugar level of 200mg/dL or higher  - Diabetes.

* Sugar level of 140mg/dL and 199mg/dL  - Prediabetes.

* Sugar level of less than 140mg/dL - normal.

Oral glucose tolerance test:

In this test you fast overnight and your fasting sugar level is tested.

Then you drink the sugar solution and the blood sugar is tested after 2 hours.

* Sugar level of 200mg/dL or higher  - Diabetes.

* Sugar level of 140mg/dL and 199mg/dL  - Prediabetes.

* Sugar level of less than 140mg/dL - normal.

Fasting blood sugar test:

A blood sample will be taken after an overnight fast.

* Sugar level less than 100mg/dL  - normal.

* Sugar level between 100mg/dL and 125mg/dL - prediabetes.

* Sugar level higher than 125mg/dL - diabetes.
